For many visitors to MSC’s private island, Ocean Cay Marine Reserve, the first thing they want to do is get out on that crystal-clear turquoise water. Kayaking is the most popular way to do it, but first-timers are often faced with a choice: Should you rent a kayak and explore on your own, or book the Guided Explorer Tour?
Here is everything you need to know to make the right choice for your beach day.
The Two Ways to Paddle
The Solo Explorer (Rentals)
If you just want to get away from the crowds and enjoy the peace of the water, a rental is your best bet.
- Where to go: Rentals are available at the activity shacks on North Beach and South Beach.
- The Experience: You have the freedom to paddle the area around the island off of Bimini Beach.
- The “Instagram” Option: This is where you can rent the famous Clear Kayaks. These aren’t usually available for the guided tours, so if you want that “floating in air” photo, you have to go the rental route.
The Guided Explorer Tour
This is a structured 1.5-hour excursion (with about 45–60 minutes of actual paddling) led by an island expert.
- The Experience: You’ll follow a guide who knows the secret spots where marine life likes to hide. They’ll share stories about the island’s transformation from an industrial site to a thriving marine reserve.
- The Wildlife: Guides are experts at spotting Queen Conch on the sea floor, Upside-down Jellyfish, and Stingrays that often blend into the sand.
2026 Pricing & Logistics
Booking ahead in the MSC for Me app is highly recommended, as prices on the island can be about 20% higher.
| Option | Estimated Price (Pre-Cruise) | Best For… |
| Standard Kayak Rental | ~$31.00 per hour | Independent explorers |
| Clear Kayak Rental | ~$65.00 per hour | Photographers & marine-life spotters |
| Guided Explorer Tour | ~$44.00 (Adult) / ~$31.00 (Child) | Families & nature lovers |
Is It Safe? (Know Before You Go)
Safety is the #1 concern for first-time kayakers, but Ocean Cay is one of the safest places to learn:
- The “No-Flip” Design: Most kayaks on the island are “sit-on-top” models. They are incredibly stable and very difficult to flip over.
- Life Jackets: Mandatory for everyone. Even if you are a strong swimmer, the island staff will ensure you are buckled in before you hit the water.
- Weight & Age Limits: To rent solo, you must be 18+. Kids as young as 10 can participate in the tour if they are in a double kayak with an adult. Keep in mind there is a combined weight limit of 205 kg (approx. 450 lbs) per kayak.
- The Protected Lagoon: Kayaking is restricted to the lagoon side of the island. You won’t have to worry about big ocean waves or being swept out to sea.
The “Clear Kayak” Warning
While the clear kayaks look amazing, keep two things in mind:
- The Heat: The clear plastic can act like a magnifying glass for the sun. Make sure to apply reef-safe sunscreen to your legs and feet! (Find more tips on our Ocean Cay packing guide)
- The Sight: If the water is a bit “choppy” or sandy from the wind, the view through the bottom won’t be as clear. Check the weather—if it’s a perfectly calm morning, the clear kayak is worth every penny.
Our Verdict
- Choose the Rental if you want a romantic, quiet hour away from the music and crowds or prefer to explore peacefully on your own.
- Choose the Tour if you have kids or want to actually learn about the rays and conch that call Ocean Cay home.
Pro-Tip: If you’re looking for the calmest water, try to book your slot for 9:00 AM. The lagoon is usually like glass in the early morning before the afternoon breeze picks up!
