It’s usually the Aqua Park that’s making a splash on MSC Seaview, but passengers on the January 10 sailing got a bit more “waterfront property” than they bargained for this week. On the morning of Monday, Jan. 12, a mechanical mishap turned parts of Deck 10 into a temporary wading pool.
Waking Up to a Washout
The drama began around 7:30 AM while the ship was cruising off the coast of Brazil between Búzios and Salvador de Bahia. According to guest reports and social media footage, the peace of a sea day was shattered when crew members began alerting passengers to a “fire” emergency.
While the alarm certainly got everyone out of bed, the real culprit wasn’t smoke—it was a burst pipe in the ship’s high-pressure fire suppression system. The result? A “Titanic-esque” scene where water gushed from the ceilings, soaking carpets and sending a river of water down the Deck 10 corridors.
The Cleanup Crew Takes Charge
MSC’s technical teams were quick to the scene, isolating the leak and shutting off the water within roughly two hours. Housekeeping didn’t miss a beat either, deploying industrial vacuums and deep-cleaning equipment to tackle the “ankle-deep” water in roughly 40 affected cabins.
“The fault was quickly isolated and resolved by our technical teams and all affected cabins were deep cleaned,” a spokesperson for MSC Cruises confirmed, adding that guest safety was never at risk during the incident.
By the time the ship pulled into Maceió on Jan. 14, local port authorities gave the repairs a thumb’s up, and the Seaview continued its Brazilian sun-seeking itinerary without further delay.
Compensation & Care
MSC is looking to make things right for those whose vacations took a damp turn. Impacted cruisers have reported a range of “Make Good” offers:
- $150 Onboard Credit for those with minor dampness.
- Cabin Upgrades or Full Refunds for guests whose staterooms were severely flooded.
- Claims Assistance for any personal gear—from luggage to laptops—that didn’t survive the soak.
While it’s definitely not the kind of “MSC Experience” anyone puts on their bucket list, the quick work of the crew ensured the rest of the ship stayed high and dry.
