MSC Meraviglia Is Saying Goodbye to New York – And Hello to Miami

In a surprise move that has caught many Northeast cruisers off guard, MSC Cruises has announced that the MSC Meraviglia will no longer sail out of New York City starting in winter 2026/2027. Instead, the line’s U.S.-based vessel will reposition to Miami, Florida, marking a major strategic shift in MSC’s American deployment.

    What’s Changing?

On August 4, 2025, MSC began notifying booked passengers via email that all future Meraviglia cruises from New York would be canceled. The ship will now sail from Miami and offer a mix of 6- and 8-night Caribbean itineraries, calling on destinations such as Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, Grand Turk, St. Maarten, and St. Kitts.

Notably, this isn’t just a seasonal repositioning. According to the message, MSC will cease all sailings out of New York entirely during that season.

    Why the Change?

MSC hasn’t provided an official explanation yet, but speculation is already swirling across cruise forums and Reddit threads. Some commenters pointed to ongoing issues with Meraviglia‘s propulsion and stabilizers, noting that the ship has had a string of operational hiccups over the past few months. Others suggest the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal may be undergoing renovations. There’s also the possibility of dry dock work in spring 2026 ahead of the ship’s summer season in Europe.

Whatever the cause, the move means that cruisers in the Northeast will have fewer winter options unless MSC introduces a replacement ship for the Brooklyn port — which, based on the current language, doesn’t seem likely.

What Are Your Options If You’re Booked?

MSC is offering a few ways for impacted guests to adjust their plans and detailing this in an email to all that are affected:

    • Move to a 6- or 8-night sailing on Meraviglia from Miami (with onboard credit included)
    • Switch to a different 7-night cruise from a U.S. port (Miami, Port Canaveral, or Galveston)
    • Receive a Future Cruise Credit
    • Or, cancel for a full refund

Rebookings begin August 6, and guests must act by September 30, 2025.

Guest Reactions: Frustration, Flexibility, and Faint Hopes

Reactions across online communities have ranged from disappointment to understanding. Some New York-based cruisers are understandably annoyed — the convenience of a local port was a huge draw, and many had already booked great deals for 2026 and 2027. Others are holding out hope that a different MSC ship might take Meraviglia’s place.

One Reddit user summed up the sentiment perfectly: “Oh well, I hope Miami enjoys the Meraviglia, it’s a beautiful ship.”

    Looking Ahead

While this is a big loss for New York cruisers, it could be a win for Miami-based travelers and those chasing warmer winter escapes. The Meraviglia is one of MSC’s most popular ships, featuring the signature indoor promenade, LED dome, a wide range of specialty dining, and shows by Carousel Productions at Sea.

If you’re affected by this change, take a deep breath — and take action before September 30. There’s still time to find a Plan B that gets you back to sea.
